A slow day at sea...
The day after Cochin we had a few conversations with people who had a variety of experiences ashore. Some good, some bad, the usual mix.One gentleman did not at all take to the hassle that he and his wife met while attempting a brief walk outside the port gates. He got visibly upset while merely telling his tale. Another couple were hassled so much they asked for the help of a police officer.
As usual, the culture gap is too much to overcome for some people. I really would like to hear a discussion about various people's reaction to immersion in cultures that are foreign to them. In a nut shell I think that some people are more tolerant than others in many matters. Time will tell where we fit into this mix as we spend time ashore. It can vary from minute to minute and obviously from person to persons subjected to the same experience. I am almost afraid to send this off before we spend time on our own with Jim and Gail today, away from the safety of an organised tour. We are going to attempt to go to Elephanta Island and then search out some Saris for a couple that cannot go ashore.
We will see in a few hours how tolerant we are.
On a lighter subject, we have some good news to announce....our missing laundry has appeared! Some two months ago, we sent a load of washing in without our name and cabin number on the slip. It took us some time to realise that some essentials were missing. My underwear and socks are now up to full quota. Same for Fellette. Last week the steward appeared with some blouses and bits and pieces and asked if they were ours. Yes, Fellette said, I forgot about that set of PJ's, but where are the bottoms? That prompted me to ask the steward if there was a lost and found for laundry. He asked for further details and behold, the underwear crisis was over.
Bombay tomorrow. [Never mind this Mumbai stuff, that is like the NDP changing the name of BC]
